I’ll admit I’ve tried my hand at many things, but I always come back to story. I'm a reader first, and everything I do, be it editing or writing, is in service of a great story.
I studied poetry, literature, and writing at the University of Oregon. I was honored to be one of only sixteen students selected to be a part of the first Walter and Nancy Kidd Tutorial, a year-long, graduate level course in writing fiction. It was there that I learned the discipline and the deep bones of the craft of writing. I’ve worked for bookstores and publishing companies, technology companies and clean energy services companies, always employing my core skills of writing, editing, and coaching other writers. I’ve taught writing classes at women’s retreats and led corporate writing training sessions. I’ve attended master classes from some of the best in the industry. I served as a judge for nearly a decade for several Romance Writers of America’s chapters’ merit-based contests. I've been a professional editor since 2002.
I love copy editing. It's like taking a blurry photo, where everything's in place just fuzzy and bland, and sharpening everything into tight focus. Minor adjustments can wreak miracles and I love to see stories transformed with a series of these minor adjustments. It's my greatest pleasure to be a ghost in the background, helping the author's true voice shine.
(In no particular order) Jim Butcher, Raymond Carver, Diana Gabaldon, Robin Hobb, Neil Gaiman, Barbara Kingsolver, George RR Martin, Robin McKinley, Alice Munro, JK Rowling/Robert Galbraith, Branden Sanderson, Tad Williams, Terry Tempest Williams, Patrick Rothfuss, Erin Morganstern
I read quite a lot of fantasy, and read mystery, historical fiction, and romance in smaller doses.
